Air source heat pumps

An air source heat pump takes heat from the outside air and moves it into the house, running on electricity instead of burning gas or oil. Ian installs and services them across Wolverhampton and the Black Country, and will tell you whether one suits your house before you decide, because not every house does.

Is your house right for one?

A heat pump runs at a lower temperature than a boiler, so it wants bigger radiators, a hot water cylinder and a house that holds its heat. Ian will tell you straight whether yours does.

What changes

Living with a heat pump

A heat pump heats a house differently from a boiler, and the differences matter more than the brand.

  • Lower, longer heatThe radiators run warm rather than hot, for longer. The house is kept at a steady temperature rather than blasted twice a day.
  • Bigger radiatorsBecause the water is cooler, many radiators need to be larger to give out the same heat. Some houses need most of them changed.
  • A hot water cylinderA heat pump can't heat water on demand like a combi, so a cylinder is needed. Houses without one need space for it.
  • The outdoor unitAbout the size of a large suitcase, on a wall or a base outside, with room for air to flow around it. It makes a low hum when running.
  • Insulation firstA poorly insulated house loses heat faster than a heat pump can supply it economically. Loft and wall insulation and draught-proofing come before the pump.
How it works

From survey to switch-on

  1. Heat loss survey

Ian measures each room and works out how much heat the house loses, which sets the size of the pump and the radiators.

  2. Design and quote

Radiator sizes, cylinder, pipe runs and the outdoor unit position, with a written quote. The survey is free.

  3. Installation

The outdoor unit, the cylinder, any radiator changes and the electrical supply. NICEIC registered, so the wiring is certified by the same person.

  4. Commissioning

The system is set up, the controls explained and you're left with the paperwork and the manufacturer's warranty registered.

Boiler or heat pump?

Not every house is ready for one

A heat pump suits a house that holds its heat: good loft and wall insulation, radiators sized for cooler water, and room for a hot water cylinder. In the right house it runs on electricity for less than a boiler burns in gas. In the wrong one it struggles to keep up, and a new gas boiler is the better spend.

Ian fits both, so he has no reason to steer you either way. He measures the heat loss, prices both options side by side and tells you honestly which one suits yours.

Questions about air source heat pumps

Before you ring

All the questions and answers →

Do you fit air source heat pumps?

Yes, installed and serviced. Ian will tell you whether one suits your house before you decide, because a heat pump wants bigger radiators and a well insulated house to work well. Heat pumps.

Does air conditioning heat as well?

Yes. Nearly every unit fitted today is a heat pump, so the same system heats the room in winter and cools it in summer.

Why does the installer need to be on the F-Gas Register?

The refrigerant in an air conditioning system is a fluorinated gas. The law says only a certified person can install, service or dispose of equipment that contains it. Ian's business is listed on the F-Gas Register.
