LPG boilers for homes off the gas grid

LPG boiler stopped?

Check the tank gauge or the cylinder changeover first. An empty tank looks exactly like a broken boiler.

If you can smell gas, turn the supply off at the meter if it's safe to, open the windows and ring the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 before anyone else.

What is different

LPG and natural gas

The boiler is much the same. The fuel, the pressure and the supply are different, and that is where the LPG-specific faults are.

  • The regulatorSits on the tank or the cylinders and sets the gas pressure to the house. A failing regulator gives a boiler that fires weakly, or not at all, in cold weather.
  • Changeover valvesOn cylinder installations the automatic changeover can stick, so the boiler stops when one pair runs out even though the other pair is full.
  • The burner settingA boiler set up for natural gas burns badly on propane. Converting or commissioning a boiler for LPG is a job for an engineer registered for it.
  • Pipework and jointsPropane finds small leaks that natural gas would not. The pipework is tested at the service.
  • Running outAir gets into the pipework when the tank runs dry, and the boiler needs purging and relighting once it is refilled.
A service

What an LPG boiler service involves

  1. Visual checks

The boiler, flue, regulator, hoses and pipework are inspected.

  2. Pressure and tightness

The working pressure is checked at the boiler and the pipework is tested for leaks.

  3. Combustion

Flue gas readings are taken with an analyser and the burner is cleaned where it needs it.

  4. The paperwork

You get a written service record with the readings before Ian leaves. The visit usually takes 45 minutes to an hour.

Also on LPG

Caravans, park homes and range cookers

Ian's Gas Safe registration also covers LPG in caravans and park homes, so the boiler, cooker and fire in a static caravan or a park home can be serviced and safety checked by the same engineer.

LPG range cookers, AGAs and Rayburns among them, are looked after under the range cooker site.
