Common faults

What usually goes wrong

Most repairs are one of these. Ring and describe what the boiler is doing.

  • No hot water, heating fineOften the diverter valve on a combi, or the hot water sensor. Ian carries the common parts on the van, so it's usually a swap on the day. Anything specialist is ordered the same day.
  • Pressure keeps droppingTop it up to between 1 and 1.5 bar using the filling loop. If it drops again within days there is a leak somewhere or the expansion vessel has failed, and that needs an engineer.
  • Fault code on the displayCodes differ by make. Note the code and ring. Some point to a blocked condensate pipe in cold weather, which is a quick fix; others point to the fan, pump or ignition.
  • Radiators cold at the bottomSludge in the system. Bleeding won't fix it. Ian tests the water and recommends a power flush only when it's needed.
  • Boiler keeps switching offOverheating, poor circulation or a flue problem. Turn it off and ring. Repeated resets can make it worse.
  • Banging, kettling or gurglingLimescale on the heat exchanger or air in the system. Worth looking at before it turns into a breakdown.
How it works

What happens when you ring

  1. You describe it

What the boiler is doing, any code, the make if you know it, and where you are.

  2. Ian gives a time

He says when he can get to you, and gives you an idea of the cost on the phone. If it's urgent, say so and he'll see what he can do. No extra charge for evenings or weekends.

  3. He finds the fault

Ian traces the fault and tells you what it needs and what it will cost before any work is done.

  4. Fixed and tested

The boiler is run up, checked for safety and left working. You get a written record of what was done and the parts fitted.

Repair or replace?

When a repair stops making sense

A well serviced gas boiler is commonly expected to last 10 to 15 years. Once repairs start costing a large share of a new boiler, or parts are no longer made for it, replacing it is usually the better spend.

Ian will give you the price of a repair and the price of a replacement so you can decide. New boilers come with up to 12 years' manufacturer warranty when they are serviced every year.
