Choosing a boiler

Combi, system or regular?

Most homes with one bathroom suit a combi. Two bathrooms in use at the same time usually means a system boiler with a cylinder.

Type 1

Combi

Hot water
Heated as you use it. No cylinder or tanks.
Suits
One bathroom, or two used at different times. Flats and terraces.
Space needed
Least. The boiler alone.

The usual answer for most homes

Type 2

System

Hot water
Stored in an unvented cylinder, so two showers run at once.
Suits
Two or more bathrooms and good mains pressure.
Space needed
A cylinder, usually in an airing cupboard.

Larger family homes

Type 3

Regular

Hot water
Stored in a vented cylinder fed from tanks in the loft.
Suits
Older homes that already have the tanks, or low mains pressure.
Space needed
A cylinder and the loft tanks.

Usually only as a like for like swap

Ian will say which one fits your house when he visits.

Cool summers

Air conditioning and heat pumps

Ian installs and services air conditioning for homes and businesses, and air source heat pumps, on the same number as the boiler work.

Most air conditioning units heat as well as cool, so one wall unit can take the chill off a home office in October and keep it cool in July.

Answers before you ring

All the questions and answers →

How do I check an engineer is Gas Safe registered?

Go to gassaferegister.co.uk, enter the registration number or the business name, and check the engineer is listed for the type of work, for example domestic boilers. Ask to see the ID card on the day. Ian's number is 6061489.

What's the difference between a heating engineer and a plumber?

A heating engineer installs, repairs and services boilers and central heating. A plumber works on water supply, drainage, taps, toilets and bathrooms. Ian does both, but by law only a Gas Safe registered engineer can work on a gas boiler. Plumbing has its own page.

How much does a heating engineer charge in Wolverhampton?

Ring with the job and your postcode and Ian gives you a price on the phone for repairs, servicing and certificates. Bigger jobs, like a new boiler, a bathroom or air conditioning, are quoted after he has seen the house. Every job is different, and the price comes from the engineer who will do the work.

Do you work on oil boilers?

Yes. Ian is OFTEC registered, number 11834, which is the register for oil heating. He services, repairs and fits oil boilers as well as gas and LPG. Oil boilers.

Do you still work on AGAs and Rayburns?

Yes. Range cookers have their own site at ianagaservices.co.uk, with prices and details. It's the same Ian and the same phone number.
