No heating? No hot water?
Ring any day. Say what the boiler is doing, when it started and your postcode.
If you can smell gas, turn the supply off at the meter if it's safe to, open the windows and ring the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 before anyone else.
Four things worth checking first
They take two minutes and they fix a surprising number of breakdowns. If none of them helps, ring.
- Is the pressure below 1 bar?Look at the gauge on the boiler. If it reads under 1, top it up with the filling loop and press reset. The pressure guide has the steps.
- Is the condensate pipe frozen? In a cold snap, the white or grey plastic pipe from the boiler to the outside can freeze and lock the boiler out. Pour warm, never boiling, water over the outside section, then reset.
- Is the timer or thermostat asking for heat?A clock that has lost its settings after a power cut, or a thermostat turned down, looks exactly like a broken boiler.
- Has the gas or power gone off?Check the hob lights and the fused spur or plug for the boiler is on. A prepayment meter that has run out stops the boiler too.

Ring, don't email
There is no email address. Say what the boiler is doing, any code on the display, the make, and your postcode.
Ian gives a time
He'll say when he can get to you and whether anything can be done in the meantime. Tell him it's urgent and he'll see what he can do.
The fault is found
Ian carries the common parts on the van and fits them on the day. Anything specialist is ordered the same day and fitted as a priority.
Running and checked
The boiler is run up and safety checked before he leaves, and you get a written record of the work.
Keeping warm and safe until Ian arrives
Turn the boiler off at the controls rather than resetting it again and again. Repeated resets on an overheating or misfiring boiler can turn a small repair into a bigger one.
If you have an immersion heater on a hot water cylinder, switch it on for hot water. Portable electric heaters are fine in the room you are in. Never use a gas cooker or oven to heat a room.
If there is water dripping from the boiler or the pipework, put a bowl under it, turn the water off at the stopcock if it is more than a drip, and tell Ian when you ring.
Ian is quick to respond, reliable and honest.

Before you ring
Can you come today?
Ian works seven days a week and fits breakdowns in where he can. Ring rather than filling in the form, say what the boiler is doing and your postcode, and he'll tell you when he can get to you. If it's urgent, say so and he'll see what he can do. There's no extra charge for evenings or weekends.
What should I do if I smell gas?
Turn the supply off at the meter if it's safe to, open the windows, don't switch anything electrical on or off, and ring the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 before anyone else. Ring Ian afterwards if the appliance needs looking at.
Do you charge for coming out?
Ring and tell Ian what the boiler is doing. He'll talk it through with you and give you an idea of the cost before he comes out. Anything bigger than usual is priced once he has seen it.
There's a fault code on the display. What does it mean?
Codes differ by make. Note the code and ring. Some point to a blocked condensate pipe in cold weather, which is a quick fix; others point to the fan, pump or ignition. Repeated resets can make a fault worse, so try once and then ring.
