Book before the heat.
Air conditioning enquiries pile up in the first hot week of June. Book a survey in spring and the unit is on the wall before you need it. Most units heat as well, so it earns its keep in October too.
From one bedroom to a whole shop
All the systems below work the same way: one outdoor unit, one or more indoor units, and a pipe run between them.
- Single roomOne wall-mounted indoor unit and one outdoor unit. Bedrooms, home offices, conservatories and living rooms. The most common job.
- Multi-roomOne outdoor unit feeding two or more indoor units, so the whole upstairs or the whole house runs off one system.
- CommercialShops, small offices and salons, where a comfortable room keeps customers in and staff working.
- Heating as well as coolingModern units are heat pumps. Run in reverse they heat the room, which is useful in spring and autumn when it is not worth putting the whole central heating on.
- ReplacementsSwapping an old or failed system for a new one, usually reusing the existing pipe route.
From survey to switch-on
Survey
Ian looks at the room, where the outdoor unit can go, the pipe route and the electrics. The survey is free.
Quote
A written quote for the system and the fitting, with the unit named so you know exactly what is going in.
Fitting
Indoor and outdoor units, pipework, condensate drain and the electrical supply. A single unit is typically fitted in a day.
Switch-on
The system is pressure tested, charged, run in heating and cooling and handed over with the controller explained. You're left with the paperwork and the manufacturer's warranty registered.
Keeping it cold
An air conditioning unit wants a service once a year. Ian cleans the filters and the indoor coil, checks the refrigerant charge and the condensate drain, and runs the system in both modes.
Common repair calls: the unit runs but does not cool, ice on the indoor unit, water dripping from it, a bad smell when it starts, or an error code on the display. Most come down to a blocked filter, a blocked drain or low refrigerant.
Ring with the make of the unit and roughly when it was fitted, and Ian will book the service or the repair in.
Ian is extremely efficient and knowledgeable. I cannot recommend him enough

Before you ring
Do I need planning permission for air conditioning?
Most houses do not, as long as the outdoor unit meets the permitted development rules on size and position. Flats, listed buildings and conservation areas are different. Ian will tell you at the survey.
Does air conditioning heat as well?
Yes. Nearly every unit fitted today is a heat pump, so the same system heats the room in winter and cools it in summer.
Why does the installer need to be on the F-Gas Register?
The refrigerant in an air conditioning system is a fluorinated gas. The law says only a certified person can install, service or dispose of equipment that contains it. Ian's business is listed on the F-Gas Register.
How much does air conditioning cost?
It is quoted after a survey, because the size of the room, where the outdoor unit can go and the length of the pipe run decide most of the cost. Ian looks at the room and gives you a price for the right system for it. Air conditioning.
Does air conditioning need servicing?
Once a year. The filters and the indoor coil are cleaned, the refrigerant charge and the condensate drain are checked, and the system is run in both modes. A dirty filter is the most common reason a unit stops cooling properly.
