Common faults

What goes wrong with oil boilers

Oil boilers have a burner, a pump and a nozzle that gas boilers don't, and most faults live there.

  • LockoutThe burner tries to light, fails and shuts down. Usually a blocked nozzle, a dirty photocell, air in the oil line or a tank that has run low.
  • Smell of oilA weeping joint on the oil line, a filter seal, or a burner that isn't burning cleanly. Worth ringing about rather than waiting.
  • Soot and smokeThe burner is out of adjustment or the nozzle is worn. The boiler wastes oil and the heat exchanger clogs.
  • Air in the lineAfter the tank runs dry, or a filter change, air stops the pump drawing oil. The line has to be bled.
  • Tank and lineA tank that is cracking, bulging or sitting on a failing base is a spill waiting to happen. OFTEC registration covers the tank as well as the boiler.
A service

What an oil boiler service involves

  1. Burner out

The burner is removed and the nozzle, electrodes and photocell are replaced or cleaned.

  2. Heat exchanger

The baffles come out and the heat exchanger is cleaned of soot.

  3. Combustion test

The burner is set up with a flue gas analyser for a clean, efficient burn, and the smoke reading is checked.

  4. Tank, line and filter

The oil filter is changed and the tank and line are inspected. You get a written service report with the combustion readings before Ian leaves.

Replacing

A new oil boiler

Modern oil boilers are condensing, like gas ones, and recover heat that an older boiler sends up the flue. A replacement is priced after a visit, because the flue, the tank position and the oil line vary from house to house.

If the house also has an old oil-fired Rayburn or AGA, Ian looks after those too, under the range cooker site.
