Air con and heat pumps

Air conditioning and heat pumps, fitted and serviced

Ian installs and services air conditioning for homes and businesses, and air source heat pumps, across Wolverhampton and the Black Country. His business is listed on the F-Gas Register, which the law requires of anyone who handles the refrigerant inside either system, and he is NICEIC registered for the electrical side, so the wiring is certified by the same person who fits the unit.

Book before the heat.

Air conditioning enquiries pile up in the first hot week of June. Book a survey in spring and the unit is on the wall before you need it. The survey is free.

Which one?

Air con or a heat pump?

Both move heat rather than make it, and both run on electricity. The difference is what they are for.

Air conditioning is for rooms. One outdoor unit and one or more indoor wall units, and nearly every unit fitted today heats as well as cools, so a home office or a bedroom gets warmed in October and cooled in July without touching the central heating.

An air source heat pump is for the whole house. It replaces the boiler, heating the radiators and a hot water cylinder at a lower, steadier temperature. It suits a house that holds its heat, and Ian will say whether yours does before you decide. He fits gas boilers too, so he has no reason to steer you either way.

Questions about cooling

Before you ring

All the questions and answers →

Does air conditioning heat as well?

Yes. Nearly every unit fitted today is a heat pump, so the same system heats the room in winter and cools it in summer.

Do you fit air source heat pumps?

Yes, installed and serviced. Ian will tell you whether one suits your house before you decide, because a heat pump wants bigger radiators and a well insulated house to work well. Heat pumps.

Do I need planning permission for air conditioning?

Most houses do not, as long as the outdoor unit meets the permitted development rules on size and position. Flats, listed buildings and conservation areas are different. Ian will tell you at the survey.

Why does the installer need to be on the F-Gas Register?

The refrigerant in an air conditioning system is a fluorinated gas. The law says only a certified person can install, service or dispose of equipment that contains it. Ian's business is listed on the F-Gas Register.

Does air conditioning need servicing?

Once a year. The filters and the indoor coil are cleaned, the refrigerant charge and the condensate drain are checked, and the system is run in both modes. A dirty filter is the most common reason a unit stops cooling properly.
